Singing and Playing Guitar at the Same Time - Debunked

A lot of guitarists bitch and moan about not being able to sing and play at the same time. This is largely because they tried it once, discovered they couldn't do it instantly, then went on the internet to bitch and moan about it. Truth is, playing and singing at the same time requires practice, a shit-ton of patience and more importantly, you need to invoke the law of second nature as we saw in this post.

Just to remind you, in this case the law of second nature states that for whatever song you want to sing and play at the same time, the singing AND the playing part must become second nature; that is, you can play it AND/OR sing it in a split second without thinking, searching for notes, counting frets, or generally fumbling around on the guitar and/or with your voice.

Most guitarists think that because they can play the tune without thinking, they can then just sing over it, but it doesn't work like that because only the playing part is second nature - the singing part must be second nature too! Watch anyone who's good at playing the guitar and singing (John Mayer) at the same time and you'll see that they've got both things down pat; both things must be second nature for this to work.

So now you know what to do. In case you need someone to guide you through the process, here are a couple of $15 courses with very imaginative titles that you might like:
